Re: Setting the book to music

Post by RoseSpecialist »

For the record, I didn't intend to use a majority of music from the 90's. That really, honestly wasn't my intention. It just kinda worked out that way...

(Revealing my age here: I'm class of '99 if this is any indication and I did most of my major music collecting in High School, so 90's music is just what I happen to have a lot of in my music library.)

For those who prefer more modern bands, the way Eclipse is going, there's going to be much much more in the way of modern rock for that book than in the prior two.

Sorry for any confusion on this...

I see no issue with music. I think you are doing great. If someone doesn't like the music that you have chosen then they don't have to read the books to your lists.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Alima.
 Wasn't trying to alienate anyone here with my taste in music... :?

Minor change to the Twilight list:

Took out "Stranger" by Secondhand Serenade and put in "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls instead for page 177. The song is the same length, so it's a "straight substitution". I've changed it on Playlist.com and am off to edit the main post on page 9 of this thread.

In case anyone was wondering how Eclipse was going: no where near as well as Twilight and New Moon. But I'm trying to console myself with the absolute fact that soundtracking Breaking Dawn will be a breeze. In fact, I might end up posting Breaking Dawn maybe a day or so later, so hang tight.

Should be another couple of weeks for Eclipse. Has anyone else had time at all to go through these?

Awesome!!! (virtual hug!)

Glad to see more people are trying this out!!

Any particular feedback, jazz girl?

Please please please feel free to send over via PM any suggestions for Ecl. OR BD!

Important Note on song spoilers for newbies to the series:
On a separate note, in case there's any newbies to the series here, I would very much NOT, I repeat NOT suggest listening to this playlist while you're reading the books for the first time... In many cases, the name of the song or some of the lyric content has the potential to act as a spoiler for stuff later in the books you may not have read yet.

In a suprising (to me, at least) number of cases, I've planted/sown songs in Twilight or NM that actually heavily foreshadow stuff in Eclipse or BD or even within the same book. These playlists were originally intended to be listened to by people who have read all the books at least once and are looking for a new spin on everything. Where I reprise songs later, they're intended to make that scene echo back to the scene when that song last played earlier in the same book or earlier in the series. This may not be very apparent now with only Twilight and New Moon "released", but when you see Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, you'll start to see what I mean as songs reappear that were used earlier in the books; in particular, songs in BD that are reprises from New Moon and Twilight.

So if there's any NEW people reading this that are attempting going through the books for the first time and DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED, I would suggest reading them all through once without the music before going through them with these playlists.

I thought that this would be the right place to post this... of course, the way things always work for me, someone will come on here and tell me about another thread that makes much more sense for me to post this in than this one

People on YouTube have made videos with their own (funny) theme songs for the characters of the books. This one is my favourite:

I guess it's time for me to resurrect this thread now that it's fallen to the second page...

Time for an update:

I AM still working on Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. Every day. For hours. This project has become my life. Jettabugfox has been working with me on this like the saint she is. For hours. Every day.

We sincerely hope you'll like the final version of Eclipse and BD when we're done with it. We're being MUCH pickier about song/scene matching and tonal consistency. I plan on going back and re-doing some of Twilight and New Moon after finishing Ecl/BD.

As a reminder: please do go through what's already been done on Twilight and New Moon. The latest version of the lists are on page 9 of this thread.

Feedback is my lifeblood right now and my eyes are starting to darken... 8-)

Has anyone else had a chance to go through Twilight/NM with these soundtrack/playlists yet?

If anyone has particular songs they love for Eclipse or Book 3 of Breaking Dawn, now's the time to speak up. (Book 1 and 2 of BD are 99% done). I already have Stephenie's songs placed. Just need to fill the gaps. I am going through the "My Eclipse Playlist" and "My Breaking Dawn Playlist" threads already, so if you've posted something there, I've probably already seen it/considered it/used it.

Dreamer! Thank you for the good news! That's great that you loved it! Were there any songs in particular on the Twilight Playlist that you felt really worked well or didn't work very well?

Everyone: see below for an update!

For anyone that might not have seen this thread before, make sure and read through from the beginning so you understand what the point of this project is... Remember this is just a fan project!

Breaking Dawn is 98% done - there are still some tweaks that need to be done on a couple of scenes where we need to decide which emphasis we want to place (musically) on some scenes. For example, on the last chapter of Book 2 of Breaking Dawn where Bella is giving birth, Stephenie Meyer has stated in an interview that My Never by Blue October belongs there (she even specifies the page number!!!), but the song is so slow and sad whereas the text is all chaos and action, so we're trying to find a middle-ground that isn't too jarring, musically-speaking. Also, there were a few songs from Stephenie's playlist that for personal reasons, jettabugfox and I didn't really like ("I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred, for example - it fits lyrically, but it's very jarring musically next to the songs before and after it), so we found alternates for that song. As such, when the Breaking Dawn Playlist is finally posted, there will be the "Stephenie version" where all her songs are placed and integrated onto one Playlist.com list and the "Rosespecialist and Jettabugfox version" that has all the alternates on one. There's really only a few of these, but we figured that trying to have multiple songs for one passage on the Playlist.com playlist just makes things confusing... When we go back and tweak Twilight and New Moon, this is something we plan to fix on those as well.

Eclipse - Jettabugfox and I re-started "from scratch" on this one a few months ago as we were going about it the wrong way BUT we are now about halfway done. We are working on this for hours and hours every week to get it to you all as fast as possible!

I LOVE how the Breaking Dawn playlist turned out and love how well Eclipse is NOW going.

The broad plan is to:
1) finish Eclipse,
2) finish tweaking Breaking Dawn
3) release them both here on the Lex :D
4) go back and take a fresh look at Twilight and start tweaking that until...
5) after New Moon the movie comes out and the soundtrack is released and then that NM soundtrack needs to be integrated into the Playlist and tweaked until I'm happy with it based on new standards I've devised.
6) Finish tweaking Twilight until it fits my new standards
7) When Eclipse the movie comes out, integrate the Summit-made soundtrack
8) When Breaking Dawn the movie comes out, integrate the Summit-made soundtrack.

Again, if anyone has specific feedback on songs they especially did or did not like on the Twilight and New Moon lists, please let me know!

I can't remember all of the songs that I liked and didn't like, but I do remember a few songs I liked

nr. 6 Curbside Prophet - Jason Mraz
nr.23 Blood - My Chemical Romance
nr. 75 Little Star - Nora Nordenstam

But that's just what I remember now. I can go through the list again in a few weeks if you want me to.

( NM in two weeks 8-) yyaaay! )
