Actually, she was an uncomfortable child to be around while human. However, being burned at the staked warped her ability to what it is now. Any more information than that has not been revealed.

I know when I'm in pain I feel both less human and less humane, and I can't really claim to have felt any sort of pain compared to that of the transformation.
