Was it just me or did anyone else picture Melanie as slightly more ethnic than most of these suggestions? I think it would be an interesting casting choice, especially considering the contrast with Pet who is your quintissential blonde haired, fair skinned, pale eyed waif.
Speaking of Pet, not to pull from the Twilight cast, but even before she was cast as Jane I always pictured Pet as an older Dakota Fanning (and think about the fact that she'll be at least 16 by the time they get around to filming, if not 17). And we all know that the girl's got the acting chops to pull off a ridiculously old soul in a young body.

I could see Jessica Alba as Melanie. I imagined Mel to more Latina in looks. Hayden P (not even going to bother trying to spell the last name) from Heroes would be a good Pet/Wanda.

I think Jessica Alba could be good, i think it would be cool if they had some unknowns play in the movie though :/ possibly

i am thinking Izabella Miko (Cammie from Coyote Ugly and she was in the Mr. Brightside video from the Killers) for Wanda/Pet... and I like the Jessica Alba suggestion, but we need someone younger with her same flavor i think...

Well I have good timing...I just finished reading The Host and now they're making a movie...excellent.

Here's how I pictured Melanie:

5'10 or 5'11
Native American (descriptions of her tan skin)
Very fit and a little muscular, but in a good way, not creepy Madonna or Kelly Ripa way

as far as actresses go though, I'm pretty stuck. I just don't see her as this pale faced person and she needs some spunk in her

This may sound odd, but Rose Byrne?
Or Saffron Burrows? More indie actresses than any of the aforementioned names.

Eliza Dushku definitely would be awesome, but having seen her in just about everything she's been in, it's hard for me to be impartial. She could definitely pull off alternating tough as Melanie and vulnerable as Wanda. However, there's more screen time in Wanda mode than in Melanie mode, so soft with the ability to play tough rather than the other way around.

I don't know. It's always hard to try to find someone because when I read a book, I see the person in my mind and it's hard to find someone that looks like that.

I have to agree with that, it's always hard to find a celebrity to play someone when you have the character pictured your own way in your head.

i honestly pictured megan fox as melanie without all the intense makeup, like in pictures such as these.

to say the least, this one really looks like it could be melanie.
