ABOUT THIS SPECIAL FORUM -- READ BEFORE POSTING!!!

Post by 24601 »

We're trying something we haven't done in a long time: opening up discussion on some VERY hot button topics. We're doing this because we believe in YOU, our users. We are counting on your good will and good sense to keep these conversations friendly and open-minded. We need to recognize that people feel passionately about their own point of view (which is fine) but they may feel threatened by posters expressing different points of view. If this happens, (and we know it will) responding defensively and expressing contempt for other people's opinions, will be totally unacceptable. We believe it IS possible for people to disagree AND still like and respect each other. It's all in how you have the conversation. To help you all make this conversation a success, we have put together some Posting Rules.

But we believe it IS possible for people to disagree AND still like and respect each other. It's all in how you have the conversation. To help you all make this conversation a success, we have put together some Posting Rules. PLEASE READ THEM. The success of this depends on everyone following them, and understanding why they are there. We can't do this without you!!!

Please note that the threads in this forum are for DISCUSSING our different views and learning from them. Experience has shown us that more interesting ideas get aired when people feel free to explore each other’s views. To help this happen, some Posting Guidelines:

  • This forum is an OPEN place to discuss these subjects, we are not here to change each other's views. On this site you don’t win points for out-arguing other people, you win points by listening to others and adding good comments to the conversation. The goal is to understand what they’re saying, not disprove it. If someone else's reasoning doesn't make sense to you, ask them to explain -- don't attack their logic. Keep an open mind; you’ll get more out of the conversation.

This is a conversation, we are not here to debate one another.

Be respectful towards any authors or media personalities we discuss. Intelligent criticism is welcome, just be sure you put it nicely.

Respect each other. We all come here with different experiences and expertise; everyone has a right to contribute the the conversation. This can be especially important when ideas from literary criticism, clinical psychology etc. are relevant to the topic. An academic perspective can be illuminating, but it doesn’t trump all others.

Tone is everything. Make sure your post has the right feel to it. Reread your post (please use the preview button) for tone before you hit the submit button; things often come out sharper than they sounded in your head. Go the extra mile to be conciliatory: it makes all the difference.

Don’t be too easily offended. Often the tone that we read into a post isn’t the one that the writer intended. And remember everyone has a bad day sometimes. Be understanding.

NEVER post in anger. If something riles you, come back to the convo when you’ve cooled off.

If someone is rude or confrontational, IGNORE THEM. The best response to a provocative post is to pretend it’s not there! Just pm a mod and we’ll take care of it. Remember, you don’t have to answer a post that annoys you...

Courtesy is a must. Using language that is intended to be hurtful, belittling, or offensive will get this thread locked and you possibly banned. CONSIDER THIS YOUR WARNING.

Have fun! That's what we're here for.
