I have to respectfully disagree.

Bella doesn't function outside her relationship with Edward. Her thoughts and opinions and values are all centered around that relationship. Without Edward in her life, Bella has nothing to fall back on. Even when he was gone, he fueled every decision she made.

That's over exaggerating. Not all her thoughts or values centered around Edward. She had thoughts for herself and for Charlie and Renee and even her minor friends at school. And certainly her values didn't center around Edward, otherwise she would have changed all she is for him and they wouldn't have had to argue about what was going too far in the relationship and what wasn't and whether or not to go to college and so on.

I think the fact that she was able to start having fun with Jacob, start living a semi-normal life again is proof enough that Edward didn't fuel every decision she made even when gone. She may not have wanted to admit it or give in to it, but she was enjoying herself again. As someone who has been zombie-like when left before (when your whole world feels turned completely upside down), I know it takes time to recover. Bella started to recover. She started to see a life outside of Edward. And even when Edward came back, she wanted to hold on to part of that life, insisting on continuing a friendship with Jacob. That whole relationship proves that she has an identity outside of Edward. She can be herself around other people. And yes, she does have a self.
Precisely because death awaits us in the end, we must live fully.

What you say is all true but she is still not complete without someone else in the picture to do it for her...she needs other to bring out who she is and what she wants to be...She's not strong enough on her own to pull that off...The damsel in distress works every time...god we guys are stupid

I don't get that feel from her character. I think it's just situational and we only see Bella a short time before Edward and life at Forks. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Like I said before, that she has hobbies and likes and dislikes. Things that have nothing to do with any one person other than herself. She makes decisions for herself just like anyone else. I really don't see her as the intentional damsel in distress. If anything, she tries her hardest not to be, she just can't help it that she's the clumsiest person on earth. She certainly doesn't like being supported by other people or to have to depend on them and let them do things for her, which is exactly what damsels in distress are looking for. The ironic thing is, that was one of the thing Edward found attractive: she wanted to stand on her own two feet and be brave. She wasn't looking for someone to save her, she just wanted to be somewhat normal and find friends for the first time. She was happy to see that she wasn't out of place in her new school, like she had been in her old one. She most likely clung so much to her mom because she grew up in an area that considered her out of their social class and looking like a pale oddity in a tan desert area.

But she is the damsel in distress all the time, Port Angels the van, the cliff, the motro bike then ice the ...her actions tell a differetn story that the BS she is trying to pass of as her way of thinking...she's blind to herself as to who she really is...not that uncommon.

She can't help the fact that Tyler drove his van into her or there happened to be a rapist on the street the night she was walking it. The typical damsel in distress goes looking for those situations, revels in being saved. She doesn't have that mentality, and I don't think she's hiding it from herself either.

Maybe, but she still needs rescuing on a regular basis. So she fits the mold...you know the whole New Moon do crazy things to see Edward does fit your definition of a Damzel in Distress...pretty funny...jacob becomes her white knight but she only wants her Dark Knight...uuummm that sounds good ;)

Alright, I'll put it this way: Edward and Bella were meant for each other in ways that they never really wanted or saw possible. Bella never wanted to be rescued, but she had all the physical need for it. Edward never saw himself as anyone's savior, especially not Bella's. But every time she was in trouble, he was in the position to save her and found himself doing so. That's what I think defines their relationship. They're exactly what they didn't know they needed from each other.
